James R. Gavin III, PhD, is President and Professor of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to taking this position, Dr Gavin was Senior Scientific Officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in Chevy Chase, Maryland and Director of the HHMI-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program. Before joining the senior staff of HHMI, he was Professor and Chief of the Diabetes Section, Acting Chief of the Section on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hypertension, and the William K. Warren Professor for Diabetes Studies at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He previously served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, and was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He continues to serve as a reserve officer in the USPHS.

Dr.Gavin graduated from Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, with a degree in chemistry. He earned his doctorate in biochemistry at Emory University in Atlanta and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. His postgraduate training included an internship in pathology ay Duke University School of Medicine, an internship and residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St Louis, Missouri, and a clinical fellowship in metabolism at Washington University School of Medicine.

Active in clinical research, Dr Gavin has authored and coauthored more than 180 articles and abstracts for such publications as Science, Journal of Applied Physiology, Diabetes, and the American Journal of Physiology. He has also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology and the American Journal of Medical Sciences. He is chairman of the National Diabetes Education Program and a past member of the Advisory Council to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders. He is also chairman of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the VA Cooperative Diabetes Study.

Dr Gavin is a member of several professional organizations, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, and the Association of Black Cardiologists. He is a past president of the ADA and was voted Clinician of the Year in Diabetes by the ADA. Additional honors include the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service from the ADA, Internist of the Year from the National Medical Association, the Emory University Medal for Distinguished Achievement, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Duke University School of Medicine.
